When should I use a FCE?

• To determine if your client/patient can safely perform the essential functions of his or her job or for the purpose of ADLs.

• Post surgical readiness for physical or occupational therapy.

• To determine if PT/OT has has improved your patient's ability to perform his/her job.

• To help substantiate an IME regarding the patient's ability to return-to-work. 

• To reduce your liability regarding your patient returning to work and re-injury.

• When employer, rehab nurse, or insurance carrier asks you to fill out a physical capability form, and you are unsure what would be appropriate restrictions.

• To evaluate if a client is "fit for duty" after a medical leave.

• To help determine an individual's physical demand levels for the purpose of qualifying for SSD/LTD.

• To determine physical demand level for PI clients that have reached MMI before plaintiff attorney sends then to vocational expert or economist.
